4 Key Tips to be a Good Web Writer

Image via Guidebaba

At All Reviews, we have been receiving emails from our readers asking us for tips on how to write for the web effectively. The emails came from a variety of people, including students, homemakers and other bloggers.

Understanding the correct method of writing will not only help you increase visitorship, it also proves your mark as a writer who is able to write with acceptable standards.

With that said, here are the 4 tips you need to be a good web writer.

1. Writing

Good writing is powerful writing. Even without the usage of “flowery” language, getting your point across to your reader in the simplest and most understandable way will reach them most effectively.

Quoting from Ogilvy PR Australia: “Good writing looks effortless, but it is the product of endless practice and revision. Good writing doesn’t need jargon or endless adjectives; it just needs to get the message across.”

2. Interactivity

Allow for comments to be written on your blog posts. Your readers have something to say, so please allow them the space to do so. After they’ve commented, be sure to reply to them. No one likes talking to a wall.

Writing is a one way activity. You write, you hope that people read it. Occasionally people write something back, which is reassuring, as it means that someone is awake. Very occasionally, something explodes.” – Julian Stodd’s Learning Blog

What Julian Stodd is referring to when he says “something explodes” is the conversations created between your reader and you. This builds up a lasting relationship with your readers, as your readers know that what they say is of value to you and not discarded.

3. Content

In terms of content, it is part of the key to a successful blog as well. Below are some tips in generating good content.

a) Originality – Every blogger needs to come up with their own blog posts. If the blog post can be read elsewhere, why would they want to read yours? Hence, every post should be original and expressed how you feel towards it. It is the author’s opinion that the readers wants to know about.

b) Relevance – The content of the blog should be relevant to the reader. Since they are visiting the blog, they would expect the content to be relevant to what the blog is about. For example, a music blog should mainly focus on music unless there is a link between the other topic and music.

c) Crediting – This is especially important because it can get one into trouble if neglected. Information taken from other websites need to be credited and permission sought from the owners. Nobody likes to have their hard work ripped by others without any acknowledgement.

4. Layout of blog

Lastly, the layout of your blog needs to be appropriate and user friendly to both the audience and the author.

a) Suitability – Depending on the nature of the blog, the color and theme used should suit the blog in order to give the relevant feeling to the readers. For example, a fashion and make-up blog can use brighter colors such as pink red as the blog color and theme.

b) User-friendliness – Buttons and links should be placed at prominent places of the blog to ensure ease of navigation for the readers, a reader feeling lost will definitely leave the page. Blog content should also be placed high to ensure lesser scrolling and given the variety of web browsers, make sure that the blog is viewable in all of them.

There you have it, the 4 key tips to becoming a good web writer. Feel free to comment or give your opinion about other tips in becoming a good web writer!

All Reviews enters the RP Blogger Challenge 2012

All Reviews enters the RP Blogger Challenge 2012
Singapore-based movies, music and food review website hopes to win big at inaugural blog competition

Singapore, 18 January 2012 – With the abundance of movies, music and food review websites available readily on the internet, the authors of All Reviews found a need to consolidate these commonly searched keywords onto a single blog platform for easy and convenient reading. The All Reviews blog saw great success, and has decided to enter the RP Blogger Challenge 2012 to see how it stands among the competition.

“We want to be the one-stop destination for Singaporeans looking for great movies to watch, delicious food to eat and catchy music to hear,” said Mr Bryan Ong, editor at All Reviews.

All Reviews is made up of three core beats, mainly:

Food – All Reviews’ primary style of food reviewed are Singaporean local fare. Exemplifying Singaporeans’ need for quality food at affordable cost, the review on the Hougang 6 Miles Carrot Cake drew positive comments from readers.

Movies – What could be considered a favourite after work or weekend activity, hitting the cinemas serves as a great distressing tool. All Reviews seeks to sieve out the finest movies for your money’s worth. During the holiday season, All Reviews published a series of Christmas themed reviews.

Music – from Korean Pop to Indie Rock, All Reviews has got all bases covered. Our extensive and in-depth coverage of the Mnet Asian Music Awards 2011 shows the capability and wealth of information our readers will be treated to.

All Reviews partners with up-and-coming blogs to deliver content outside of All Reviews’ beats.

"Working with All Reviews has been a fun and enriching experience for all of us. During the exchange of content between the blogs, we managed to generate viewership to both blogs,” said Ms Yap Ann Ann, blogger at iTravel-Destination, a partner of All Reviews.

All Reviews will also be holding a contest whereby those who give constructive feedback through their Facebook page and Twitter will stand a chance to win a pair of movie passes or even get a chance to go on a food or movie review with one of the All Review team members.

[Music Exclusive]: An Interview with Emma Dzalin - Director of Urban Ignite

Emma Dzalin is a 19-year-old girl with a bubbly personality from Republic Polytechnic. She has many interests such as writing, photography and playing tennis. However, her greatest passion lies in singing. Emma is the lead singer of her very own band Emma and the Jets as well as the editor of Urban Ignite, a blog that features budding Singaporean musicians.

The All Reviews team had a privilege to meet up with Emma for an exclusive interview, where she shared her personal opinions about the local music scene.

All Reviews:
Who inspired you to start singing?
Emma Dzalin: I have an old soul, so I look at people like Aretha Franklin and Joss Stone. I am inspired by them and but I try to make my own sound.

AR:
What was your most memorable performance?
ED: I think when people say memorable, they would think of some big performance. For me, it’s the start of my first band, Emma and the Jets, which I really like. I was comfortable with the genre, comfortable with the people and the memorable performance I had with them would be the band’s very first gig in Republic Polytechnic (RP). It was called ‘The Initiation’, where we performed Jamiroquai’s ‘Love Foolosophy’ and ‘You and I’ by Lady Gaga.It was the start of everything.

AR:
If you could collaborate with any local band, which will it be?
ED:
Sixx! But it will be hard because they are a nine member band and we have five, so it will be like an orchestra instead of a band.

AR:
What’s a good place to catch local bands in action?
ED: I would say Tab, located at 442 Orchard Road #02-29. The ambience, environment and setting is good. The crowd is just perfect, so it’s a good platform for local musicians to perform there. *giggles* Also, my favourite local band Sixx usually performs there.

AR
: What’s the most interesting band you’ve come across while blogging for Urban Ignite?
ED: I think the most interesting band that we’ve interviewed would have to be Bear Culture, because they are the very first band that we featured on Urban Ignite. They’re from RP, they’re actually friends of mine and they performed for Baybeats 2011 held at the Esplanade. Bear Culture had an interesting story to tell because they all started from different genres and they had a lot of things to share with us about their journey when they first started out in one Interest Group (IG, equivalent to a Co-Curricular Activity or club) as different individuals coming together.

AR: Negative comments are bound to appear on blogs, would this affect you and your band? ED: Sometimes we just need bad comments to improve ourselves because we are not up there yet. We still got to be open to comments, so if what people say is true and bad, we’ll just take it and turn it to something positive. So you’ve just got to suck it up!

AR:
Before you go, what songs by local musicians would you recommend for our playlist?
ED: Every song by Catalogue V and Sixx. I would put them all in!

Without further ado, here's Emma herself in action singing a little excerpt from Summertime!

[Movie Review] Puss in Boots.

By Shuhui
"Look deep into its eyes" How many of us has fallen prey to the cutesy antics of any cat? If you're looking for killer cutesy cat acts, Puss in Boots is the movie for you. Too bad Twilight did not have any cats in it.
Puss takes center stage on a quest to become the Greatest Hero in legend with the help of some magic beans in a time before he met Shrek.
Not just a movie for cat lovers, it is a great movie for those who wants more Puss to themselves.

Entertainment value :3.5/5

Lots of meowing action along with familiar characters such as Humpty Dumpty and Jack and Jill, this movie is great for the family and friends who wants to have some light entertainment.

Story: 3/5
Story was not particularly memorable besides the dance sequel that Puss and Kitty Soft Paws had. The twist in characters were interesting, turning the Jack and Jill who "went to fetch a pail of water" into criminals searching for the perfect place to plant those "Beans of Legend".
We thought Puss was the elite cat in town at the beginning, competition came as Kitty Soft Paws, the cat with no claws appeared. From the story, it seems that Kitty had once been a house cat and had her claws clipped off before being abandoned into the town of San Ricardo.

Overall Movie Rating:

Great for the whole family, the lack of a memorable story line sets it back down to 4/5

Lesson of the story:
"You are not as bad they say, you're better."

Lets hear from you!
