Part 4 of AllReviews' thoughts on Mnet Asian Music Awards: The Evolution of "MAMA"

By Bryan

The entire Singapore was different yesterday as everyone around me, inclusive of my Twitter timeline, was talking about "MAMA", which happens to be an acronym that stands for the Mnet Asian Music Awards 2011.

It was fun to eavesdrop while many K-pop fans were going on and on about their favourite groups such as the popular  "SNSD" (So Nyuh Shi Dae or Girl's Generation) and "SuJu" (Super Junior) while mentioning the word "MAMA" over and over again.

Girl's Generation known as SNSD (above) and "SuJu" Super Junior (below)

However, it was even more interesting to see those who have almost no knowledge of K-pop try to fit into the conversation, since "MAMA" to most would be a short form of mother. Of course you can't blame them for thinking that way, thanks to the famous lyrics of Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody, sung by the legendary (also an Internet meme) Freddie Mercury.
Freddie Mercury: "Mama, I just killed a man.."
Next, comes the real shocker, besides the Asian artistes that usually attend this yearly event, American artistes like Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre and will.i.am made themselves present and even performed alongside CL, the leader of the 4-girl Korean group 2NE1 (New Evolution of the 21st Century).

With the meaning of words changing and the collaboration of artistes from different music scenes, what will happen next?

Let us here at AllReviews know what you think in the comment box down below and also, just for fun, who do you think will be a funny celebrity or musical artiste to see at the Mnet Asian Music Awards 2012?

Weird Al Yankovic would be my choice!

Part 3 of AllReviews' thoughts on Mnet Asian Music Awards

ITS MAMA!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The MAMA Awards also known as Mnet Music Asian Music Awards has just drawn a close to its award ceremony. With stars like 2NE1, Girls Generation and Super Junior gracing the red carpet, fans were treated a much anticipated arrival of their idols.
The award ceremony was broadcasted live across different platforms such as Facebook, Youtube, on many different TV channels across asia.

Did you watch MAMA 2011 in SG?
Watched the Live telecast of it through Channel U as advertised.  “After school just chiong ar home to watch the red carpet”
The excitement has already been building up weeks before the event as posters were hung up everywhere along with the made sale of their tickets.

Reasons for watching?
“Watch it for the Kpop stars of course, its my first time watching them live on TV leh!”
The kpop stars are definitely a huge attraction.Big stars like Girls Generation, Super JuniorB2St and 2ne1 definitely draw the attention of Kpop fans in Singapore.

My opinion on the stage?
Awesome stage, though I must say it’s a little small for such a big event. The curtains made the stage looked really elegant, awesome for an event as big as this.

How was the line up?
So-so, as much as the opening did not really heat up the opening for me. I thought that there would probably be an ending stage where all the stars get on stage and sing the Music Makes one Song. The sudden appearances of the lion dancers are a little awkward. There was a good mix of English and Korean pop with performances from the black eyes and 2ne1.

The performance that i like the best.
"I’m sure we are a little biased when it comes to this, HUR HUR HUR ಥ⌣ಥ”
B2st’s performance of the orchestra version of Fiction along with the new duo Troublemaker *Made up of Hyunseung (B2ST) and Hyuna(4 minute)*

I'm sure that i am not the only one wanting to hear the orchestra version of this song. Setting the whole mood with classical musician Lang Lang playing Winter Sonata on the piano.

1 thing that u don’t like about MAMA
The broadcast of the show was not smoothly done, and the camera works were not that excellent either with sudden cuts of artist just sitting there while some performance was going on. All in all, Singapore's cameraman are not that experienced enough with such performances to make the best out of it.

1 thing to improve on MAMA
They could have invited more people to the show, they could have deployed the cameraman in korea for this event as well.

Part 1 of AllReviews' thoughts on Mnet Asian Music Awards

By: Soh Hao Siong

29 November 2011 is certainly a night to remember, especially for Singaporeans and K-pop fans around the world. The Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA) 2011 was held right here at the Singapore Indoor Stadium with over 10,000 fans gathered for the award. Being a K-pop fan myself, even though I am not present at the venue, the live telecast on Channel U made it easy for me to access the show.

10.000 fans gathered at the Singapore Indoor Stadium to witness the award ceremony.

Coming from Mnet which holds much experience under their belt in stage set-up from their own music program back in Korea, there was certainly no lack of ideas for a stage suitable for such a large scale event. True enough, I was really amazed at the elaborate decorations, especially the huge curtain which formed the word “” or “Human” in Chinese. The stage was further extended to where the artistes could have a closer experience with the fans.

Performance for the night was certainly hot as top artistes from the international community such as will.i.am, apl.de.ap, Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg held special performances which certainly blew the crowd away. Check out the performances below:

Renowned Chinese pianist Lang Lang was also present at the event, where he collaborated with B2ST and performed their hit track “Fiction”. Check out the performance below:

The best performance for the night, in my opinion would definitely go to Girls’ Generation and 2NE1. With the energetic and special remix by the former, the crowds’ emotions were definitely brought to a higher level. The transition of lyrics from Korean to English during the performance clearly showed me how much practice they have put in mastering it.

For 2NE1, the lightings and special effects on the backdrop were perfect in displaying their style of hip hop and what they are made of. Check out the performance below:

However, despite the success of the event, I personally felt that the red carpets show was not exactly well executed. Utilising the four emcees strategy, they were not given an equal chance of interviewing the guests. For example, with Michelle Chia’s fluency in English and mandarin, most of the interviewing of the guests was left to the Korean emcees and Michelle’s job was practically just holding the microphone for the guests.

Furthermore, there were times when the newly arrived artists were introduced and the camera goes to focus on the previously interviewed artistes getting their photographs taken, such as at 0:17 in the video below.

Overall, although the event is considered a success, there are definitely areas for improvement for the organisers, both Mediacorp Vizpro and Mnet.
